so you think you can dance unitThis video showcases the process of Merton's So You Think You Can Dance project. The SYTYCD project is great for collaboration, communication, and teamwork. Students enjoy working together to create a 60 - 90 second dance that they will show the class by recording themselves on an iPad. Each video gets uploaded into a Google Drive file that can be shared with every class so they can watch their classmates videos and assess them on their dance performance. This is a wonderful student centered learning piece that would be a great addition to any physical education classroom.

SYTycd merton pe compilationHere is a video montage of most of the Merton SYTYCD dances from 2015. It showcases the differentiated style of learning, because everyone's dance is so different. Students really enjoy working on their dances and working with their dance teams to create this dance.

sytycd international dance offIn 2012 Merton did their first every SYTYCD unit. I was able to find a school from the United Kingdom that had a dance team. We decided to have a Skype dance off after the completion of our dance unit. To make this happen the students had to vote for their favorite dance from each hour. I have 8 hours, so that gave me 8 dance teams. This was still to man dance teams to take to the international SYTYCD competition. I set up a website to put the top 8 dances on and shared the website with families in our school district. Families and friends could vote on who they think was the most deserving dances and the top 5 would be a part of the international SYTYCD competition. This was an experience that I will never forget as a teacher and the students will always remember the opportunity!

imuscle2 workout video productionFor this project I was looking for another activity for small space where students could create something that other classes could use (I could have the videos on an iPad at a circuit fitness station around the fitness room or gym). I thought this was a great way for students to select fitness exercises that were geared for making them healthier while teaching them about all different types of fitness equipment. The project details were that students were asked to create a 10 minute workout video that includes 2 warm up and cool down exercises, then choose 16 MSE, cardio, or a combination of both, and finally they could choose to focus on full body, or focus on upper, lower, etc. This project was differentiated for every student and gave them a specific workout plan to focus on and learn about, so they could continue to improve their fitness in that area.

Archery video analysisI wanted my students to create a video that would help their shooting by analyzing their shooting form using the 7 basic steps in archery. My students used Coaches Eye, which is an app that allowed them to start and stop the video, draw on it, and even voice it over, and recorded a short during the unit. They were expected to reflect on the seven basic steps and give tips or pointers if they realized they did something wrong. This helped them process their shooting form and gave the great visual feedback as to how they could improve or to showcase what they were doing really well. It also let them think about the seven basic steps again to make sure they knew them in the proper order. Finally it allowed me to see and hear their progress and understanding of the material.

World cup sport education seasonHere is a great recap on Merton's World Cup Soccer Season. This unit was ran through a sport education model where each hour was a group from the Men's 2014 World Cup Season. The class progressed through a preseason, season, and postseason finishing up with a Merton World Cup Final game against the top 7th grade and 8th grade teams. While the teams practiced and prepared for games each player also had a role or job to perform. The jobs were coach, captain, trainer, equipment manager, video journalist, referee, trainer, and rally starter. This is such a great way to put your students in charge of their learning, build excitement about a sport, and engage all different learners through their jobs on their team. I highly encourage you to try to implement a sport education season in your physical education classes.

Gymnastics fun in physical educationThis gymnastics unit was a student centered learning experience. 5 years ago I had students take video and pictures of every skill from level 1 to level 3 gymnastics skill sheets. I then moved those pictures and videos into Google Drive folders that students have access to at every gymnastics station. Students carry their level sheets with them to each station, but can easily find the different skills on the iPad and can see what the more complex skills look like through videos. Doing this freed me up as a teacher and gave me the ability to assess, help, and encourage more. Students have the ability to move through the levels at their own progress and speed and they are completely in control of their learning. When given this freedom they are more excited, engaged, and motivated to preform their best, which guides them to become physical literate individuals.
