TGfu Volleyball Unit plans
Here is how I run my TGfU Volleyball Unit - Lesson by Lesson. These are not all my activities, but ideas and lessons that I have discovered and used throughout my years. They have been extremely successful in creating great volleyball games by the end of the unit. I believe in these lessons, because they are all games and activities that are highly inclusive, encourage skill and tactic development, and focus on many touches for skills competence. Conoetence leads to confidence, with leads to motivation and participation. This is exactly what physical educators are looking for out of their students and exactly what student need to have a fun time in your class. Check them out and let me know what you think!

Bounce GameThe bounce game is a great activity to get your classes started with volleyball. It starts the u it off right by challenging students to begin to move and anticipate where the ball is going (so many student are afraid to move in volleyball, so get them started and ok with that now). You can also add extensions for students that already play volleyball by asking them to play the bounce game, but then make a forearm pass or set after the bounce. Feel free to bring this activity up again later as an instant warm up. Another extension would be a bounce, then position yourself for a forearm pass, set, then spike and have then get set up again. Have them keep track of how many they can get before the ball bounces twice or they lose control of a pass.
Line gameHere is another great activity that can be modified with many different extensions. The main idea is to start to think about "shot" selection that will move your opponent around the court while also anticipating where your opponent will be hitting their shot. The initial game form starts with catching and throwing. The ball must bounce on your side and then you are attempting to get the ball to bounce on your opponents side to score a point. You can make this more challenging by changing it from a catch and throw to using a forearm pass. Now you will have to play the game like two square, so it bounces over the line and must bounce on your opponents side of the court. This really helps students control, positioning for forearm passes, and moving to make a return shot.

Setting GameHere is an activity that can help work on the technique for a set in volleyball. This is a very simplistic activity that can be made more challenging if you set a intricate point system with cones, hula hoops, and lines on the gym floor. Make it a friendly competition for total points between partners.
wall ballThis activity is another simplistic game that will help your students understand the importance of varying the force, placement, and timing of different shots (well throws for now). This also focuses on anticipating where you need to position yourself for a return. The best part is that no serious volleyball skills are needed to begin this game. It involves throwing and catching, but you can make extensions for this activity as the unit progresses. Again, let's get out student's moving, playing a game, and learning specific tactics that are necessary forsuccessful volleyball game play.

seated, kneeling, & standing PassingThis is great for specific for technical aspects of skill development. It offers different levels for each group and level of skill.
fuukaharaThis activity is another fantastic beginner activity to introduce many different volleyball tactics that most inexperienced don't understand. First off, there are no volleyball skills needed, but this activity simulates game play tactics like using three passes to attack the net, setting up teammates, and positioning or defending an attack in volleyball. Again, this could never be done on the first day of a unit because of the complex skills needed to be successful playing volleyball. Everyone can be successful with the skills being used in Fuukahara. Experienced groups can be progressed quickly when they show you they can successfully attack and defend the other teams attacks. Have fun with this one!

day #2
self rallyHere is a great instant activity that your students can do right as they enter the gym. Again this will get them moving and working on their volleyball techniques at their own level. Have them work on their forearm passes and sets. Encourage volleying the ball out of their air, but remind them that letting it bounce once can make them more successful at controlling their passes. This activity also lets everyone get many touches on the ball, which will lead to more skill competence at a fast pace.
Line Game - Forearm passing
As discussed above this a a great extension of the line game that begins to work on the forearm pass technique, exceptional control, placement of shots, and body positioning based on anticipating the return. Get them moving quickly because they already know the premise of this activity from the first day.

pass, set, over the netI utilize this activity with 6 badminton nets with 2-3 partner groups working on a net. This gives many different students skill practice with very frequent touches. Feel free to ask students to work on forearm passes, sets, and then have the passers adjust their passes to have the receiver make a decision as to what shot they will need to use. The passer is thinking about where their "return" will go, the receiver is anticipating, positioning themselves, and developing their techniques. My favorite aspect of this activity is it is active, inclusive, engaging, and allows many touches along with tactical thoughts.
Wall setsHere is an extension from the wall ball activity. Now we are asking students to use a specific skill and to still focus on the tactics of successful volleyball game play. Keeping sets alive can be somewhat tricky, so adding in forearm passes as well could help them be more successful.

two vs themselvesHere is one of my favorite net / wall activities. It can be used for so many different sports and teaches the same tactics while using different skills. This activity teaches skill control, passing, communication, anticipation, and varying shots. There is a lot of decision making happening and so much fun while being highly active in their learning. There is enough space where all groups can work on thei activity and manage the space which adds to the complexity of this activity :)
square pass & switchHere is another great activity for skill work. There are many levels that increase in complexity that all students will enjoy. It brings in skills and tactics while keeping everyone moving and participating.
2 vs 2 mini court gamesThere has been a lot of hard work and now it's game time. I use mini nets so everyone can participate and get many touches. I will always allow once bounce between shots, but encourage volleying out of the air if a student wants to. The one bounce rule keeps the game going, which keeps students more active while allowing everyone in the game to get more touches. Utilize this activity as an instant activity everyday if you so choose.

day #3
2 vs 2 mini court gamesGet your student working right anyway and enjoying volleyball. Let them practice their skills and tactics they have learned with a group of students at their level. Let them learn and have fun instantly!
1 vs 1 mini courtTime to bring back the skill acquisition and tactical thought process while participating in a small sided game. Have partners battle it out in a 1v1 game that will help your students focus on the control of their shots, vary their placement, and anticipate where their opponent will attack.
wall serve gameTake the wall game to a whole new level by adding serve skill paractice while still focusing on the tactics of playing successful volleyball.
3 person passing drillHere comes a more complex skill practice. It will utilize teammates and different volleyball skills. It also sets up grouping for the upcoming activity.
3 vs 3 mini court gameTake their learning to the next level by adding a their player in the mix of a small sided game. Have student beginto think about court placement of their players to help set up atttacks and to defend attacks. Feel free to award extra points (meaning two points for their team) for teams that use three hits and over. Can't tonite encouraging using one bounce, but begin the focus on volleying the ball out of the air.
